How we help
A witness statement is the primary way evidence is presented in civil proceedings. A well-structured, factual and correctly formatted statement carries weight. A poorly drafted one can undermine an otherwise strong case. We prepare statements that comply with CPR Part 32 and PD 32.
Who this is for: Litigants in person, small businesses and clients working alongside a solicitor who need a professionally prepared witness statement.
What is included
- First-person, chronological structure following CPR PD 32
- Correct heading, signing and statement of truth
- Reference to and indexing of exhibits
- Response statements addressing another party's evidence
- Review of client-drafted statements
- Preparation of trial bundle contributions
Process
How the process works
01
Instruction
We agree scope, deadline and the issues the statement must cover.
02
Interview and draft
We take a detailed statement from you and prepare a full draft.
03
Review
We refine the draft with you until it accurately reflects your evidence.
04
Final
We finalise the statement, add exhibits and prepare it for signing and filing.
When we help
Common situations we help with
Every matter is different, but the following situations come up frequently. If any of these sound like yours, we can help.
- You have been directed to file a witness statement
- You need to respond to another party's statement
- You need a statement in support of an application
- You want a professional review of a statement you have drafted
Frequently asked
Common questions
- What must a witness statement contain?
- Facts you can prove of your own knowledge, in your own words, in chronological order, with the source of any information not within your direct knowledge clearly stated.
- Do I sign the statement of truth?
- Yes. Signing a statement of truth without an honest belief in the truth of the contents is contempt of court under CPR 32.14.
- How long should a statement be?
- As long as needed to cover the relevant facts, but no longer. Courts increasingly criticise over-long statements that stray into argument or opinion.
